A little more than half a decade back, during my days spent on Facebook, I had done a post on the ancestral familial connections associating three former USA Presidents with India. Having left the Social media website for good and in no position to retrieve the archival information back, I would like to restart and have a fresh perspective on the genealogical roots of the former member of Americas First Family!
In the elevated foothills of the Western Ghats of Kanyakumari District in Southernmost India is situated the Udayagiri Fort, built over the graveyards of the old Puliyoor kurichi mud Palace. In its early days, the purpose of the fort was to defend the large swathes of Paddy fields of Nanjil Nadu (the vast flat fertile plains along the Paraliyar River) and the human settlements from competing enemy forces. Given its location, the mud palace was a strategic asset. However, after the battle of Colachel and the integration of its Dutch General-in-Chief Eustachius Benedictus De Lannoy, a Flemish naval commander, into the Travancore army, the profile of the region and the necessity to have a Modern Palace arose. His inclusion into the army helped the kingdom extend its boundaries and fortify important forts. However, inspite of his immense contributions in modernizing and equipping the Travancore army with new European warfare techniques, the only evidence of his 36 year presence in the district is just confined to his tomb that lies in one corner of the Udayagiri Fort.

Born on December 30, 1715, in Arras, France, De Lannoy arrived in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 1737, where Dutch general Van Imhoff took a liking to him. It was with the general that De Lannoy landed in Cochin in 1739. The Dutch, who used to buy pepper from Marthanda Varma, were having skirmishes with the king over prices. De Lannoy took part in the capture of Colachel in Kanyakumari, a major spice trading port town, but later surrendered to the Travancore king in 1741. Despite mastering in modern warfare, the dutch were lacking local geographic knowledge and as result were no match for the tactics used by the Travancore army. After his surrender, De Lannoy, a shrewd strategist, won over the confidence of the King and was tasked with the job of training the local soldiers in artillery warfare. He soon established a gun-powder factory and cannon foundry at Udayagiri Fort; becoming the garrison and training ground for new recruits. By 1755-56, this modernization in building forts and armament base helped the Travancore army in expanding the territories of the kingdom till Cochin. One such example of his modernization is the long forts of South Travancore Lines beginning from Kanyakumari and ending at Boothapandi, the Vattakottai Fort, Thovalai Fort, Marunnakottai Fort (Ammunition Fort), Shavakottai Fort (Cremation Fort) and Aralvaimozhi Forts were built inorder to fortify the district from any external military threat coming from Tinnelveli which lies to the North. Finally after his fortification projects De Lannoy and his family settled in Udayagiri Fort. The Fort enclosed an area of 85 acres. Out of its ten bastions, five were installed with Cannons and the remaining five with muskets. A Roman Catholic Church was built for De Lannoy and the other catholic soldiers. Nevertheless, after serving the Travancore army for more than three and half decades General De Lannoy passed away on the 1st of June 1777.

Inspite of hailing from the aristocratic French speaking De Lannoy Family, he was forgotten thereafter. However, Many of the other family members migrated to the US from Leiden (modern day South Holland, Netherlands) and were among the earliest European American migrants. For those who stayed on in the Americas, the Family name De Lannoy was rechristened to Delano. Philippe de Lannoy, hailing from the maternal side of General De Lannoy and from the same Aristocratic family who’s family members once served as the governor of Bourbourg in France, had to flee after a civil war broke out in the 16th Century. His Great Great Grandsons were the 25th President of USA Mr. Theodore Roosevelt, the 30th President of USA Mr. Calvin Coolidge and the 32nd President of USA Mr. Franklin D. Roosevelt, who till this day is considered to be the greatest American president since president Abraham Lincoln. So that is how deep the family connections go! Coming to General De Lannoy, his tomb lies amidst the ruins of the old church in Udayagiri. The Latin inscriptions on his tombstone read as such:
“Stand Traveller. Here lies Eustachius Benedictus De Lannoy who was Commander of the General Travancore Army and for nearly thirty seven years with the greatest faithfulness served the King, to whom by the strength and fear of his armies he subjugated all Kingdoms from Kayamkulam to Cochin. He lived 62 years and 5 months and died first day of June 1777. May he Rest in Peace”
